The Iron Veil2025Campaign, Experiential, Art Direction

Gary, Indiana is frequently cited as the “most miserable” city in America, shaped by decades of population decline, economic hardship, unemployment, and a history of high crime rate. The challenge was to transform this perception and make Gary a compelling destination for urban travelers. Rather than shying away from its troubled past, Iron Veil fully embraces it as the foundation of the city’s new identity. The project repositions Gary as America's premier entertainment ghost town, turning its abandoned industrial landscape and dark history into an immersive destination where the city's history is not hidden, but brought to life.

Inspiration Moodboard - The Politics of Dark Branding. If done right, dark storytelling and visual language can be just as compelling and effective as conventional brands built around cheerful tones and optimistic messaging.

Context
Gary was once a prosperous industrial city, with the Gary Works steel mill serving as the backbone of its economy. As the American steel industry declined and the Rust Belt fell into economic decline, Gary's population steadily decreased while crime rates soared high. Buildings were abandoned, and years of neglect left behind crumbling structures that shaped the city's reputation as a ghost town. For the rebrand, however, these existing urban ruins become the natural stage for immersive experiences, drawing inspiration from the adaptive use of architectural ruins in Longhi Architects' set design for King Lear in 1999.

Rebranding Gary
The official Iron Veil logo uses a minimal typographic treatment that reflects the city's gritty character and darker identity. The distinctive forms replacing the dot on the letter “i” reference a hammer and pair of pliers, serving as a subtle nod to Gary's industrial heritage and its history as a major steel-producing city.

Building The Narrative
Every crime mystery needs a compelling antagonist. These steampunk-inspired villains, including “The Foreman,” serve as the perpetrators that visitors must track down throughout the experience. A new villain is introduced each year, creating an evolving narrative that gives returning visitors a reason to come back while gradually expanding the fictional universe surrounding the city of Gary.

Guided Tour
The Iron Veil program is intentionally flexible, allowing visitors to explore the city at their own pace while investigating clues throughout the crime mystery. Participants can choose to work independently or collaborate with other groups as they uncover new leads. The only requirement is to return to the designated checkpoint at a set time for a shared meal, where groups can compare discoveries, exchange theories, and discuss their progress.

Experience
Each participant is provided with a custom-branded quad bike to navigate and explore the city throughout the tour. The vehicles feature Iron Veil's visual identity across their chassis. At the designated gathering time, a beacon searchlight projects the Iron Veil logo into the night sky above Gary, serving as a visual signal for participants to follow back to the checkpoint for the group gathering.

Local Business

A key element of the Iron Veil experience is its integration with Gary's local businesses. Alongside the central crime mystery, participants are encouraged to explore local restaurants to exchange theories and gather clues by interacting with business owners throughout the city. Designated restaurants serving as gathering points are transformed with steampunk-inspired interiors, extending the visual language of Iron Veil and reinforcing the immersive narrative of the experience.

Merch Kit

Each tour package includes a curated set of steampunk-inspired merchandise designed to complement the investigation. The kit features practical items that participants can use throughout the experience, including an Iron Veil-branded notepad and pen for recording clues, protective goggles for quad-bike rides, a tote bag, and other themed essentials.

Hype
Public perception of the Iron Veil experience will build through press coverage, critic reviews, bus shelter advertising, and social content from influencers and immersive-experience communities around the world. This layered approach to hype marketing is designed to generate organic word-of-mouth and position Iron Veil as a new kind of destination experience. By embracing Gary's existing identity rather than concealing it, Iron Veil aims to establish a new model for city-wide immersive tourism and demonstrate how a city's history and character can become its greatest attraction.
